PIECE OF CAKE, PEACE OF MIND

Exploring, creating, & reflecting one day at a time

You’re probably thinking one of two things:

1) What the heck is puppy chow? You make dog food?

2) Really, Rachel? Puppy chow? Everyone can make puppy chow.

To answer 1)–Puppy chow is a delicious snack made out of Chex cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powdered sugar. It’s wonderful. And to 2)–YES! Puppy chow! I know it’s really simple, but that’s why it’s awesome! Everyone loves it and it’s a perfect quick snack to make for a group of friends at, let’s say, a pool party, which is what I did today. Puppy chow exemplifies what food does best–brings people together (around the snack bowl, in this case) and makes them happy.  Who says good food can’t be simple? The more I cook, bake, and eat, the more I realize that more often than not, the best food is the simplest.

PUPPY CHOW

Ingredients:

  • 8 1/2 c. Chex cereal, or equivalent cereal (this is a little bit less than one box full)
  • 1 c. chocolate chips
  • 1/2 c. smooth peanut butter
  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 1 1/2-2 c. powdered sugar

  1. Measure the cereal and place it in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Melt the butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips together in the microwave, just until you can stir all the ingredients together–make sure not to burn the chocolate! (but this should only happen after over a minute, so microwave in 15-30 second increments)
  3. Mix the chocolate mixture until smooth.
  4. Pour chocolate mixture over the cereal and toss gently until all pieces of cereal are coated.
  5. Put the powdered sugar in a large ziploc bag, and pour the coated cereal in on top of that (I like to do this part in two batches, so it’s easier to move the cereal around in the bag).  Close the bag and gently toss the cereal with the powdered sugar until all pieces are coated evenly.  Pour everything out onto a parchment or wax paper lined baking sheet and let solidify a little bit (or you can go ahead and eat it right away).

So there you have it: one of the easiest, but most widely appreciated recipes of all time (or maybe this is just with my friends and family?).  Kids love it, adults love it, it’s irresistible.

Have fun, but just remember that this isn’t real puppy chow. Keep it away from the dogs and enjoy!
